ABOUT MASTERCARD FOUNDATION ALUMNI NETWORK  

The The Mastercard Foundation Alumni Network | Mastercard Foundation is an ambitious group of young people coming together to create sustainable youth-led committees across the African continent and globally that embody the values of the Foundation and contribute to Young Africa Works goal of 30 million young people in dignified and fulfilling work by 2030 . The peer-led committees will be set up with fully accountable leadership, with the drive and creativity to facilitate social change networks – connecting people and opportunities. The Mastercard Foundation Alumni Network currently has Chapters in Ghana, Kenya, North America (USA and Canada), Rwanda, Senegal/WAEMU, Nigeria, and Uganda. If you’re based in a country where a Chapter has not been established, keep an eye out as new Chapters will be launched soon.

THE OPPORTUNITY 

As a voluntary committee member, you will receive support, including access to leadership development opportunities. There will be compensation for any out-of-pocket expenses from participating in the committee-related work. Details of this to be discussed later.

WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE

With support from Mastercard Foundation staff, as part of the committee, you’ll be expected to do the following–

  • Create a committee vision and mission for the network, aligned to that of the Mastercard Foundation.
  • Set the direction of the committee by planning what might happen during the 24-month term of the committee, and then implement the plan (i.e., activities, deciding on roles in the committee, and preparing budgets).
  • Establish the governance structure of the committee (i.e., management, processes, and procedures that guide the network) and systems to engage globally between various chapters.
  • Ensure the network is as inclusive and diverse as it can be; think about which people represent your community, now and in the future.
  • Actively engage Mastercard Foundation Alumni across the network, reaching out to them and ensuring their voice is at the center of all decision-making.
  • Embed data collection and management processes from the beginning – what do you need to be able to communicate your success?
  • Create a framework to measure the impact the committee has had.
  • Plan for and manage the subsequent committee recruitment in 2027, and then train and mentor this group; this is likely to be influenced by what you have learned and how you would do things differently.
  • Work collaboratively with your peers, Alumni, young people, and the Mastercard Foundation staff team.
  • Take on any other assigned responsibilities.

WHO YOU ARE

  • You must have been a participant in any of the Mastercard Foundation Programs to apply for this role.
  • Strong communication skills; from writing project proposals to managing social media posts; event organizing to one-to-one networking.
  • Can build, lead and manage a team of young people.
  • Demonstrates negotiation and influencing skills, and can listen to others around you.
  • Are highly organized, work well in a team, and have a proactive approach.
  • Demonstrates budgeting, or financial management skills.
  • Are strategic thinkers, alongside those that enjoy operational-level detail.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 

  • You must be a former recipient of support from the Mastercard Foundation, either directly or through partners, such as scholarship or leadership, business entrepreneurship, and vocational training etc.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Legally reside and legally be able to work in Ghana, Rwanda, Canada, Kenya, WAEMU Countries ((Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal & Togo) or the USA for the duration of the commitment.
  • The commitment length is 24 months, with a maximum dedication of 16 hours per month.
  • Be available for the orientation training dates, in-person or online, where applicable.
  • If shortlisted, you will have an in-person or an online interview.
  • You may be asked to upload a video later in the process, more instructions will follow.
  • Rwanda applicants must have participated in at least one of the following programs: Agriculture (e.g., CARE International, DUHAMIC ADRI), Tourism & Hospitality (e.g., Hanga Ahazaza, BPN), Education & Scholarships (e.g., Leaders in Teaching, IEE, FAWE, ALU, CMU, Ines Ruhengeri, UR), or Vocational Training (e.g., Corps Africa, Love and Hands, Resonate, Impanuro Girls Initiative).
